Notes :
(1) 17015 replaced by 17041 when 71000 hauling train.
(2) 71000 was booked to take the train through to Penzance but failed at Newton
Abbot with a valve gear problem so 67020, (which was running to Penzance for the
return journey), took over.
(3) Booked route after Truro was Truro - Penzance & back.

Tour Review

This tour was originally advertised as diesel to Bristol then 6024 "King Edward I" + 71000 to Penzance with diesel back. 6024 was under repair so the steam part would be 71000 solo.
Despite this it still looked like a good tour, the Duke over the Devon banks. However it was not to be. We left slightly late & at Taunton we ran along the relief line west of the station to let a Voyager pass. I have a note that the tanker was in the wrong place at Tiverton Junction & whilst there we were passed by a Spitfire Tours train as well as some others. Leaving Tiverton Junction we were checked at Cowley Bridge and then held in platform 6 at Exeter but nothing passed us. By not stopping in Dawlish Warren loop we got to the Newton Abbot stop only 30 min late.
Here it was announced that the engine had a problem with its valve gear so it would not be going forward. 67020 was due to follow us for the return journey. It eventually arrived, shunted 71000 off and attached to the train. We left 124 min late. As the train had to be back before an engineering block there was not enough time to get to Penzance so it terminated at Truro. On the return we were gaining time but were stopped at Worle Jn to let a Weston - Paddington train precede us so got to Bristol just a few minutes early.
