Tour Comments

22/05 :
Claypole, Arksey & Chevngton loops were booked to allow fast services to pass. Newcastle stop was to allow the kitchen cars water tanks to be topped up. Departure from Newcastle P2 produced an unexpected weave around an up service awaiting entry to the station. We passed 67026 at Newcastle. This followed during our off-train trip to Floors Castle and took over haulage when the stock was brought out of Berwick UGL by 67027 which had run round somewhere.

23/05 :
The extended stop at Garelochhead in the morning was to allow adequate time to consume breakfast! Off train activity at Arrochar was a cruise on Loch Lomond.

24/05 :
Avoidance of engineering work dictated joining the train at Glasgow Central in lieu of Dumbarton but still required reversal outside Shields depot at the same location as the 'Airdrie and Bathgate Phoenix' tour. Off train activity at Stonehaven was a coach tour up the Dee valley to Balmoral which, for much of the trip, ran close to the old Ballater branch, including the Royal Deeeside Railway at Banchory which was operational. I’ve checked my photos to confirm, the 66’s did run round during the layover at Aberdeen.

25/05 :
Beattock Summit loop was another bonus due to pathing requirements as was the weave at Carlisle into P3 to access the water supply to replenish  the kitchen tanks again. Appleby was a pleasant leg-stretching break followed by another bonus weave at Skipton to pass through the down platform, avoiding the local service train. A fast run from Peterborough and potentially very early arrival at King's Cross was not to be as we sat in Copenhagen Tunnel awaiting a platform. Overall another excellent weekend tour from UK Railtours with the usual very high standard of on-train catering, well organised and interesting off-train activities and the usual crop of bonus loops and crossovers for the dedicated micro-gricer (I was probably the only micro-gricer on the train!)
