(1) John Clifford comments: When this tour was first advertised the train
was, after Lincoln, to continue on the return to Newark then up the East Coast
main Line. Pathing problems meant that we returned whence we had come. On the
day it was found that the schedule was rather slack in parts so we ran early on
occasions. However, I don’t suppose that many 'Hastings' diesels have visited
Lincolnshire! After I joined the train, the first check was at Willesden High
Level Jn to let the 08.15 Stratford - Richmond pass. The early running on the
Hertford Loop meant that we were held at Langley South Jn to let the 10.09
Stevenage - Moorgate come up. The layout between there and Stevenage means that
up trains starting from Stevenage have to use the down line to Langley South Jn.
The rest of the outward journey passed without incident so that, even with a
slight check outside Cleethorpes, we got to our destination early. On the
return, despite leaving Cleethorpes late, we got to Pelham Street early so had
to wait for the 17.22 Lincoln - Grimsby Town and the 17.25 Lincoln - Leicester
to vacate platform 4. Further early running ensued so there was a stop at
Werrington Jn to let the 16.15 Leeds - Kings Cross go ahead. The stop at Fletton
Jn was to let the 15.00 and the 15.30 both Edinburgh - Kings Cross precede us.
We stopped in Hitchin station for another East Coast train go ahead but I did
not establish what train it was.
