Notes :
(1) The return leg was revised at short notice to run via Skipton, Normanton, Huddersfield, Stalybridge and Stockport, due to engineering works on the Hellifield to Blackburn line.
(2) Doug Lindsay comments: Performance and timekeeping on the circuitous route round Birmingham was good until Preston where there was low pressure on the water supply and watering took longer than expected. Additionally, due to a fatality at Carlisle earlier that day, all the service trains were seriously out of path with the result we left some 23 minutes late, then were looped at Oxenholme to allow three service trains to pass, leaving there some 52' late by now. However, after a standing start we went very well and climbed up over Shap in fine style with a minimum of 37 mph at the top which was commendable with 13 on!!! We then raced down to Carlisle, and luckily went straight in arriving at 13.35, 55 minutes late. Having serviced the loco at London Road, watered the stock and turned the whole train within a shortened lay-over we finally left for the return some 15' late at 15.15. A good run up towards the S&C and at Ais Gill we'd gained back a couple of minutes, but not for the want of effort which was again exceptional. Wet and misty weather on the high ground, we were still only 10' late at Ribblehead and all way to Hellifield. Then checked down as they let a stopping electric out of Skipton in front of us which seriously affected our progress to Shipley, which we passed 20' down and continued to be 20-25 minutes late all the remaining way until Wolverhampton, where we left just a minute down, as we weren't stopped for the pathing stop at Rickerscote Loop. We then remained more or less on time for remaining journey to Tame Bridge Parkway. Good climb up over the Diggle route too, excellent performance from Tornado and crews all day.
