(3) John Clifford comments: This was RTC’s annual trip to the Sussex Coast. For some unknown reason the timings showed the train as using the fast lines in the London area on the outward journey. In the event we ran on the slow line behind the 10.53 Victoria - Epsom via Selhurst. Arrival at Eastbourne was a few minutes late. However the servicing of the engine took longer than had been allowed for, so we left there late. However, we were able to leave Hastings fractionally early. There was a slowing at Etchingham (platform restriction?). In addition there was another slowing at Wadhurst Tunnel to let the 14.45 Charing Cross - Hastings come along the single line. The timings were, thus, impossible to keep to. We got to Tonbridge to find that the 14.58 Dover Priory - Charing Cross had left in front of us instead of behind us. Having been brought almost to a stand at Tonbridge we lost further time and passed Sevenoaks 12 minutes late. We did run via Bat & Ball and by being diverted via Penge East instead of Catford and also not going via Stewarts Lane Jn we made up the lost time to arrive at Victoria a minute early.
