Six Bells Junction

Notes :
(1) John Clifford's comments: When this tour was first advertised the train was going only as far as Llanelli, with an option of visiting the Llanelli & Mynydd Railway. This option remained with the tour train continuing to Carmarthen. The outward journey ran without problems. In fact, there was enough slack in the timings for us to run early at times and reach Carmarthen 13 minutes early. We were booked to cover the down goods loop at Llandeilo Jn but did not do so as the loop had been put out of use for some time. On the return the up goods loop at Llandeilo Jn was also out of use, so we didn’t cover it. Likewise the up through siding at Briton Ferry Yard was not covered. Consequently we ran early again and were held at Margam Moors Jn to let the 15.29 Swansea - Paddington (slightly early) go ahead and the 10.41 Holyhead - Llanelli (10 minutes late) cross our path. It was then on to Pencoed Loop for a lengthy wait for other trains to pass us. These were the 16.05 Swansea - Paddington which was 8 minutes late and the 15.03 Carmarthen - Manchester Piccadilly which was 20 minutes late. At Cardiff we were booked to use platform 0. Whilst I understand that this had been authorised the train was routed into platform 1 as there were concerns over the use of platform 0 by our long train. Once we set off we made up time by not stopping in Panteg loop. At Pontrilas the box was not manned so we could not go via the loop and carried on. This meant that there was a long wait in Woofferton loop so that we could follow the 15.10 Milford Haven - Manchester Piccadilly. At Shrewsbury there was a booked stop on the down main line and we followed the 16.45 Llanelli - Chester form there back to Crewe.
