(4) John Clifford's comments: There had been a delay at Cam caused by children playing on the line, we were told. Consequently, we left Bristol 17 minutes late. The lateness was gradually made up to the extent that we were only 3 minutes late passing Totnes. However, at that point we had caught up the 06.10 Derby - Plymouth which checked us. Arrival at Plymouth was 9 minutes late. It was hoped that we would make only a brief stop there and be away in front of the 08.04 London Paddington - Penzance as was booked. It was not to be. The 08.04 went and we followed it, arriving in Penzance 27 minutes late. On the return we left a minute late and were slightly delayed at St Erth as a man had had an accident getting on the train. There was some slow running up to Camborne for reasons that I did not discover and we remained late. We were held at Saltash to let the 16.28 Exeter St Davids - Penzance come over the bridge and arrived at Plymouth 16 minutes late. Departure was 12 minutes late. After this point the lateness was gradually made up with some brisk running to the extent that Uphill Jn was passed 3 minutes early. It could not last! At Worle Jn we were checked as the 19.10 Taunton - Bristol Temple Meads had been let out in front of us. It was 4 minutes late at Worle and reached Bristol 7 minutes late. Consequently we reached Bristol Temple Meads just over 7 minutes late as well.
