(4) Nigel Benning's comments: With a fair number of CFPS members unable to get
tickets for the sell out LSL tour to Plymouth behind D213 + D345 on 30/10/21,
'The Double Scotch' tour to Edinburgh was hastily arranged for the CFPS by LSL.
This was to be my first first mainline run behind a Class 40 since a return trip
from Sheffield to Lincoln behind 40013 on 27/08/1983. The tour departed Crewe on
time at 08:30 behind immaculate D345 + D213 hauling the LSL Mk3 rake of
coaches. A good run was had down the WCML, picking up further passengers at
Warrington BQ, Wigan NW, Preston and Carlisle. Of interest was a diversion
through Grayrigg Down Passenger Loop as the Down Main was out of use due to a
track defect. Arrival in Edinburgh was 2 minutes early at 13:49. Passengers had
just over 3 hours to enjoy the city whilst the stock was serviced at
Craigentinny depot, plenty of time for a bite to eat and a drink as well as
spotting some of the local trains. Departure was as scheduled at 17:03 with the
train initially heading east before turning off the ECML to travel via the
Edinburgh Sub line to rejoin our outward route at Slateford. The locos continued
their strong performance, with Crewe reached 8 minutes early at 21:44. An
excellent day out in comfortable stock behind a great pair of locos. I look
forward to the next one.
