(2) Nigel Benning's comments: The first tour advertised
for 2022 by InterCity (LSL) was 'The Electric Scot' from London Euston to
Glasgow Central, hauled by 87002 'Royal Sovereign'. This appealed to me as the
last time I had been hauled by an electric locomotive up the WCML into Glasgow
was on 17/08/1976 behind 86015. In addition, my last Class 87 haulage was behind
87034 on 27/06/2003 between Warrington Bank Quay and London Euston. For various
reasons, I didn't book until two days beforehand and on the day I drove to Rugby
to join the tour. The tour departed Rugby at 08.15 (just 4 minutes late), behind
an immaculate 87002 hauling the LSL InterCity 1st class Mk3 rake of coaches. The
minor delay was soon made up but approaching Acton Bridge the train came to a
halt with the locomotive having suffered a tap changer relay fault. Following
the attention of the onboard fitter, the problem was rectified and we resumed
our journey north 48 minutes late. The remainder of the journey north was
without incident and we were able to take our booked route via Law Jn, Holytown
Jn and Uddingston into Glasgow Central, where we arrived at 13.39, still 48
minutes late. After the stock was serviced at Polmadie, departure back south was
at our booked time of 16.00 with the DVT leading, taking the direct route from
Uddingston to Law Jn via Motherwell. Despite a spirited run south, a few minutes
were dropped en route and arrival at Rugby was at 20.37 (9 minutes late). It was
an enjoyable day out and InterCity have further tours this year using their
fleet of class 20, 40, 45, 47, 55, 86, 87 and 90 locomotives. It looks to be an
interesting year ahead.
