There was no return working, passengers returned on any service train. This was not an uncommon situation in the 1970's on the Southern Region. Normally the stock would have been going as ECS to St. Leonards (West Marina) depot anyway so, this being just after the bank holiday, BR took the opportunity to get some extra revenue by running the train as a cheap excursion over part of its journey starting at Purley which did not usually have a through service to Eastbourne.
