Notes:
(1) An off-train option of a depot visit to Thornaby was offered for and
additional £2.50 as an alternative to the circular trip via Newcastle. The tour
set-down at Thornaby for the road coach transfer, returning to Stockton.
(2) Buses back to Plymouth.
(3) Peter Turtle comments : This was towards the end of steam
heat on the Western. Laira tended to keep one set complete and was normally used
on a straight out and back turn to London on Fridays prior to being used on
charters on Saturdays. On the 1st however this set came out of London on the
wrong train, I think it was the Cheltenham if I remember correctly. Anyway Laira
had to put a scratch set together the following morning. The day itself was
rather cold, however with eth on as far as Birmingham everything was fine, but
once the 40 was on it was found that steam pipes were not coupled through the
train and some of the pipes were perished anyway. This resulted in standing at
Darlington for the best part of an hour on the way back, which found heat in the
first four coaches. I seem to recall we also stood at Derby for a while. These
events led to the train being over two hours late at Birmingham when the 33 was
able to heat the entire train. By this time the booked route from Cheltenham to
Bristol Parkway was closed for engineering work at Westerleigh resulting in the diversion via
Severn Tunnel. Arrival at Parkway was approx 1am.
(4) Stephen Atkinson comments: The tour originally advertised a pair of 33s
from Bristol to Birmingham and return but this turned out to be a class 33 and
class 31 pairing, as was advised in the confirmation letter, because the Western
Region had found it difficult to find 2 class 33s.
