Back in 1995, a railtour promoter handed out a questionnaire asking for suggestions for future railtours. This, I feel, is a good idea that does not appear to have been repeated. This thread can be used to suggest destinations which are required or even suggest those BIG locos. Hopefully Railtour promoters will read this and plan future railtours around it, or reply to any suggestions which have been tried for and denied. I'll make a start with the "Immingham Loop CLOCKWISE" and the "South Yorkshire Joint Line SOUTHBOUND" |

It has been sugested to Pathfinder on many occassions about running a Peak tour to Inverness but so far no go. Personally, I would prefer a Peak tour all around Kent. I have always been a bit partial to Peaks on the Sothern when they have been on tours there in the past! |

Kev, you're right about the Sutton Park line back towards Birmingham, it does seem rather neglected. From memory the only time I can remember doing this was on a BR shuttle back from Walsall to Brum New St on the occasion of Bestcot Open day back in August 92. I think HRT may have done it a couple of years ago, but can't recall any other tours doing it in recent years. |

Personally I'd like to cover more of the connections off of NR onto Preserved lines. An arbritory scan of my Baker suggests: South Devon Bodmin & Wenford Paignton & Dartmouth Dean Forest Severn Valley Peak Rail Keighley & Worth Valley Middleton North Yorkshire Moors Bo'ness & Kinneil Strathspey Keith & Dufftown I know some of these have a history of through services but they are uncloured at the moment. Otherwise how about these destinations: MoD Marchwood Radlett Stone Terminal/Loop Selhurst Depot through sidings St Phillips Marsh Depot Loop Didcot Power Station Loop Sheerness Car Terminal/Steelworks Felixstowe Docks Asfordby Test Track Sizewell Seal Sands Longannet Rosyth Dockyard Or these through lines: St. Catherine's Jn - Kirk Sandall Jn Carcroft Jn - Skellow Jn Inverkeithing N Jn - Inverkeithing E Jn Or more obscure bits of red line: Dudding Hill Junction - Brent Curve Junction (straight onto the mainline) DC Lines - WCML connection at Watford Jn Hepscott Jn - Morpeth N Jn Marchey's House Jn - Butterwell Jn This lot would fill up a lot of gaps in my Baker. Cue lots of "Empty Atlas" comments |

Some good suggestions there, I will add also Aintree Warcop Fen Drayton Wirksworth (connection off NR) We can but dream for the first 3. Kev, watch this space - I think Park Lane Jn to Castle Bromwich Jn is happening this Saturday. If you fancied doing Crewe to Bath. Cannot confirm yet as I have not seen any timings. |

Thanks Alan, Unable to make it from the deepest south coast but that would have been nice - particularly as it was forced on them I believe Kev |

A few years ago when nearly every freight line tour that year was caped or drastically amended, there was a directive from Railtrack (as it was) to the operators, saying it would draw up a list of permissable freight lines and branches which 'should' mean that the majority of tours in the future ran. Some branches just aren't fit for passenger use due to poor track, too many points need clipping, sited near to chemical plants etc etc which causes insurance problems. Does anyone know if this list ever appeared and if it did is it still used or hiding at the back of a drawer in the Black Tower somewhere. PRAR - many of the lines on your list have been done before on tours, WHERE WERE YOU!! Brillo |

There was a list at the start of 1997 which listed places which were forbidden to railtours, although some have been done since. It is a long list, so I intend to start a new thread with it which will appear when I've finished typing it K |

HRT did do the Castle Bromwich to Sutton Park Line on the 4th January 2003 on the Walsall Concerto - 6 bells website has full details. I also remember the list of no go areas for railtours being issued in the late 1990's. But then along came an off shoot of the BLS called Institute of Mining Engineers and did virtually every rail-connected colliery in the UK ! |

Brillo I was variously: an impoverished student, out of work graduate or budding champion rally navigator. I only really got back into trains & railtours in 1998, by which time the best years had clearly passed me by... Looing at the current calendars there aren't too many promoters offering tours over obscure freight lines and the tour which cover the easier bits of red track (eg the preserved-mainline connections) are full dinnex/mega ching. All locos are currently prohibited north of Whatstandwell so any tour heading to Peak rail will need to be a DMU. |

PRAR Apologies I thought you had been around far longer than 1998. I only first met you properly when I organised the D3489 charter at the Spa Valley last year and now keep on bumping into you on Chingfinders and Preserved Railway Galas. You are correct in that many of these lines that you quote were done pre1998 as I have done some of them with Chingfinder et al. Brillo |

Brillo I did lots of Cromptons & EDs between 1985 and 1990, but there wasn't too much need to do tours back then as there was plenty of excitement out on the mainline! PRAR who's getting the hang of formatting stuff now |

Very good PRAR, I have amended list to a Bulleted list as discussed on Industrial Invader, For the Dudding Hill Þ Brent Curve entry, keep an eye out for on 6th November 2004, they are not specifying 'Silkstream Flyover' or 'Hendon Chord' although I would have thought it would do one of those, as I don't know of a tour which has joined main line at Brent Curve Jn and run through Hendon on Down Fast [P4] Al |

Cheers for sorting out the list. Whilst I don't doubt West Hampstead Box's ability to signal conflicting moves, coming straight out onto the fast line at that point during the day seems unlikely... I don't have a Quail Map or Sectional Appendix to check against, so it could well be that the line is a figment of Mr Baker's imagination. Raynes Park Junction appears to be. PRAR |

At <http://www.traintrips.co.uk/ft.html#372> Herts have put details of their tour on 8/1/2005. No mention of Silkstream Flyover... Looks like a long day to get a 67 in the book though. |

hmmm..... If I could wish for any realistic tour (as opposed to an unrealistic one featuring Tommies!) I'd want a simple Derby-Skeg-Lludo-Derby kinda affair, with a pair or 2 of plain vanilla bombs (not bleedin' nuuuklar ones!) Or Derby-Yarmouth with a pair of Rats. A Skirl with all the proper traction?? *drifts off in a rose-tinted haze of memories* |
