Now I have my notes I can confirm that there was a special on the VofR with No.9 but it only got to Aberffrwd because of inclement weather and greasy rails causing adhesion problems. |

Was the VofR special on another day or is it an additional tour on the same day as the "Farewell to Class 24 Charter"? This tour's nearest points were Chester, Crewe & Shrewsbury !! |

Are you confusing the 28/01/78 Class 24 Farewell with 14/01/78 Merseyside Express? Or was there a rerun of the 14/01/78 on the 28/01/78 as well as the Euston to Aberystwyth/Barmouth train I was on. The VofR train headed by No.9 was definitely run in conjunction with the main excursion train and ably demonstrated one of the reasons why these trains don't normally run in winter. |

OK, I'm going to sit down and try and work this out. I went by the title of the thread, which was "28/01/78 Farewell to Class 24 Charter Addtnl Info" which according to "The Railtour Files" ....... Uh-oh .. I've seen it ..... I saw "Farewell Class" and clicked on it -- That was "Farewell Class 44" on 21/01/78. OOOPS ! Should it therefore be >>> "Cambrian Coast Express" that was 28/01/78 & had 24087 & 24133 along with 25168 & 86224. |

Yes. CCE is right judging by the motive power. For some reason I have logged the train by its marketing spin instead. It was certainly farewell to 24087 at the time as it was finally dumped at Machynlleth and replaced by 25165. I suspect that it was after the appearance money rather than actually doing any work for most of the time it was on the train. |

Further to the above and for accuracy I have just found a copy of the itinerary handed out on this train for the princely sum of 50p. And guess what? The Organiser was Mercian Railtours and the train was named "Farewell to the Class 24 Railtour" dated 28/01/78. What is the smiley for sticking out a tongue? I suspect the CCE name may have been inadvertently inferred from photographs of a Cambrian Coast Express headboard on the leading loco - seemingly a tradition on enthusiasts excursions running west of Shrewsbury to the Welsh Coast. Or has someone got an itinerary that says differently? As well as the charter on the VofE the itinerary confirmed a connecting charter on the Talyllin or a Crosville Motor Services coach tour from Barmouth. At least if you went to Barmouth you got there with a fully functioning 24. |
