NSE Salisbury Area ran an excursion from London Waterloo to Long Marston for the RE200 celebrations. The train was double-headed by 2 x Cl33s (nos not known)from Waterloo (Dep 0730), through Basingstoke, Andover, Salisbury, & Westbury (all pick ups, I think). Then Trowbridge (unscheduled stop to set down 'normals' who thought they were on a Bristol TM train from Westbury), Bradford Jn, Thingley Jn, Chippenham & final pu at Swindon (1034-1036). Route was then Foxhall curve, Oxford, Wolvercot Jn & Moreton-in-Marsh to Honeybourne(1158-1218)where 33s were detached & 8F 8233 attached for trip to Long Marston (1238). Highlight of afternoon was naming of 47142 as 'The Sapper' and 8F giving trips around MOD Long Marston loop & sidings. I'm afraid I can't remember where we went precisely, but steam took the 10/11 coach train for some distance inside the depot. I think that we may also have been hauled by AD No 98, a Hunslet 0-6-0 ST of 1953 whose boiler cert was due to expire imminently and it was to be wdr for retubing & overhaul immediately after the event.
Departure from Long Marston (steam-hauled?)was at 1610 with 20 mins in the Honeybourne exchange sidings(1630-1650). Route was then via Evesham to Worcester SH for a run-round (1719-1734). Thereafter Abbotswood Jn, Barnwood Jn, Gloucester Yard Jn, Filton Jn, Stapleton Rd, Lawrence Hill (1834-1845), Dr Days Jn, N Somerset Jn, Bath Spa (SD 1858-1900), Westbury (SD 1921-1923)then reversal of outward route. Due back at Waterloo at 2135, though I can't remember whether we got on/alighted at Basingstoke or Salisbury. Can anyone fill in the numbers of the Cl 33s?

Thank you for gen.
A page has been created for SBJ and will appear soon.
Did the 47 work the train at all, or was it just on display?

I think that it was solely on display in the centre of the depot near where the VIPs had been milling around. The 8F did most of the work around the internal system, & I seem to recall it worked us back down to Honeybourne exchange sdgs. The 33s backed on there.

Sorry to disappoint you, but no Class 33's were involved on The Cotswold Engineer on Saturday 3rd October 1987. Motive power Waterloo-Honeybourne-Waterloo was 47536
Steam power between Honeybourne-Long Marston Main Gate Rail Platform, (consist comprised 5 coaches, used during the day for rides around the system) plus the railtour stock Loco used 8233.(3-stops for unloading)
The same consist returned behind AD 98 from Long Marston Main Gate Rail Platform to the Exchange Sidings and then 8233 (railtour stock only) to Honeybourne. The highlight of the day was AD 98 in steam, a rare event for the public. I can remember that when it worked 5 coaches+railtour stock, it was extremely noisy to say the least!. There were no less than 35 timetabled train movements during the day from the Main Gate Rail Platform in Long Marston using 8233, RE 98 and RE 0-6-0DH's 235,260 and 261. 47142 was named 'The Sapper' at 14.15 by Michael Spicer MP.
I have passed the full set of timings onto the moderator for posting on the relevant railtour page.

Neil,
Sorry it's taken me a while to reply, the Discussion Bd has been rather dormant recently, so I haven't been visiting it v often. TYVM for filling in the details, I've not actually made much of an attempt to find my photos, so certainly can't refute or corroborate any of the info you've provided, but have absolutely no reason to disbelieve you. Thank you for filling in the (sizeable) gaps in my memory.
Alastair
