Can you help Jon Stubley identify this tour; It was organised by (I think) the Lincolnshire Echo newspaper. It ran from either Boston or Skegness to Edinburgh via Sleaford, Lincoln and Doncaster in late April 1974, probably a Saturday. The loco was a class 40 throughout, as far as I can remember and we joined and departed at Sleaford. We had the afternoon in Edinburgh and then came back almost the same way, but it was remarkable for one detour, and that was at York where the train was routed via the freight lines from Skelton Junction to Holgate Junction. Why this was I have no idea, but we certainly never passed through York Station, and none of my enthusiast friends would ever believe this happened. I think they were jealous as the chance to travel over that section of track was nigh impossible. |
