NS 2250+2257 08:41 Rotterdam CS to Maasvlakte. NS 2257+2250 12:20 Maasvlakte to Rotterdam CS. Also that day Stoomspoorlijn Dendermonde Puurs charter 0-4-0 VBT No.1 Puurs SDP platform to Baasrode Noord and return. Of interest on 30/09/86 was catching the 16:32 Arnhem to Winterswijk rush hour service topped by NS 2273 and tailed by NS 2307. Especially enjoyable thrash considering I had suggested such workings in a note to a magazine editor some time before which was summarily dismissed (a polite summation of what was actually printed) as fiction by a well known rail enthusiast of the time. |

The Europoort Open Day shuttles to Maasvlakte should have been headed by NSS owned ex DB steam loco 65.018. According to an LCGB article in one of their Bulletin magazines the steam loco failed with leaking tubes prior to the first departure of the day. Hence the diesel haulage - I didn't complain about the better view from the front! |

Comments: The steam loco owners should read SSN (sorry for the typo) standing for Stoom Stichting Nederland or something like that. You can look the outfit up on their website which lists their current activities including operating former German Railways steam locos on NS. It may also shed light on the Europoort shuttles origins somewhere in its pages. This was an LCGB block booking but I understand that for a number of years the shuttles from Rotterdam to Maasvlakte during the eighties were a regular annual weekend occurrence at around this time of year. Riding the train was only part of the package offered to each ticket holder. You were supposed to travel on the train in one direction or the other completing the circle by boat from or to Rotterdam. I couldn't definitely say who organised them or if they were given a name. It could have been the City Council / City Tourist Board or in some way linked to the Europoort complex as a way of allowing the public to view the facilities. As mentioned elsewhere my LCGB Bulletins went awol during one of my house moves so details are from memory ( for some reason I didn't record info. on operators that in hindsight would have been useful data today). The charter mentioned in the additional comments on the Dendermonde - Puurs line was chartered by the LCGB as part of a weekend taking in the Europoort shuttles in the morning and the SNCB mainline excursion from Brussels to Mariembourg the following day. |
