Brief Review

A pretty good day all in all despite starting about 80 late after the trainman failed to appear and we had to get a spare man taxi'd in from Crewe.

Still, more farcical Notwork Snail timings and a good performance from 67005 left us only a little late leaving Carlisle where the single kettle (advertised a pair) proved to be ill equipped to keep time with load 10 + a dead 67 (ETHing merrily) and proceeded to lose more time. Still there was time (for a pint) in hand at Appleby and we left bang on time and promptly lost 12 minutes going up Ais Gill - it was a good noisy slog and Uncle Dick proudly declared it was probably the heaviest train taken up there by a single Black 5 in recent years, but it just served to underline the superiority of the diesel ticking over on the back end for me.

Anyway, whatever your view we swapped back to the purple engine at Blackburn and headed back to Derby pulling back more time before a signal check outside Derby left us about 15 late at the finish.  I've now had over 800 miles off 67005, about 650 of them on 2 steam tours !  Wonder if I'll clear it next year?
