Tour Review

This tour was being run by Vintage Trains to take passengers to the seafront airshow being held at Eastbourne ; and operated by West Coast Railways. The train was delayed before departure from Tyseley Warwick Road due to a points failure. Passengers were collected at Nuneaton and Narborough, before the train took the Wigston South Curve to join the Midland Main Line. After picking up more passengers at Market Harborough and Kettering, it was fast line all the way along the Midland to Hendon, where the train slowed and crossed the tracks to the slow lines, and took the Acton Branch over the top of the West Coast, Chiltern/Great Central, Birkenhead, and Great Western main lines in turn. A short stint on the North London Line brought us to Kew were we peeled left and onto the tracks of South West Trains to Clapham Junction were we had a brief pathing stop. Then it was via the Ludgate lines and over Stewarts Lane to Brixton, and into Southern TOC territory. We wove our way through the south London suburbs by way of Herne Hill (pathing stop) and Selhurst to East Croydon , weaving through the precession of Class 377 Electrostars and Gatwick Express Class 460s. Then it was all hast to the coast via Redhill and Gatwick Airport , before leaving the Brighton Line at Keymer Junction. We passed sedately through Lewes, and on to Eastbourne , where we paused outside the station for a platform. After disembarking, the train was shunted into the sidings.
The return journey was a retread of the outward, pausing again briefly at Clapham Junction, but with the added interest of being signalled over the Hendon Flyover.
