(4) John Clifford comments: When this tour was first advertised it was to hauled by 34067 'Tangmere' to Swanage & 30777 'Sir Lamiel' back to London via the SW main line throughout. 34067 was undergoing an overhaul & 44932 was mentioned as a substitute. However, in the event 30777 was the only steam used using the route shown. On the day we ran roughly to time until we were near Basingstoke when there was a 5min stop before the station & a 4min stop just after Worting Jn. We recovered most of the delays by Southampton and got to Swanage only 1min late. The return journey was rather different. We left slightly early but got stopped outside Wareham for 6mins, then almost 10mins in Wareham station as the 1720 Weymouth - Waterloo was running late. On arrival at the signal for Southampton Goods Loop it was found to be 'off' but for straight ahead, so we stopped (19.38-37). Eventually we found out that the Goods Loop had been refused for reasons that I am unaware of. So we moved forward to reverse. We had been due to take water in the loop. Our driver reckoned that with assistance of the diesel we could get to Basingstoke without problems. This is what happened. We managed to make up the lost time and an on time arrival back in London would have been possible had there not been a signal check outside Waterloo.
