(3) John Clifford's comments: The name 'Diesel Special to Quainton' was the one under which I booked the tour. The leaflet given out on the train called it 'Diesel Tour to the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre'. Take your pick! It was believed that this was the first time that a Class 33 had travelled on the London Underground network. Whilst at Quainton Road, 20227 was named 'Sherlock Holmes'. This loco also carried a number 8, the same as the number of the electric loco of the same name which used to run between London and Rickmansworth. On 20227 there was also a shed plate '221B'. The train ran without major problems. On the outward journey there was a stop outside Rickmansworth. I don’t know the reason; possibly we had caught up a Metropolitan Line electric. The stop at Amersham both ways was to set down and pick up a Metropolitan Line operating Official. We got to Aylesbury early so had to wait for the 11.13 Aylesbury Vale Parkway to come off the single line. Early running seemed to be the order of the day on the northern part of the tour. At the railway centre Hunslet 0-6-0ST no. 3890 (running as N.C.B. no. 66) was providing rides. On the return journey, having visited the Wall Siding at Marylebone twice and the Tunnel Siding we set off only to be stopped, although I don’t know why. A slightly late arrival at West Ruislip ensued. Chiltern Railways kindly stopped the 16.12 Birmingham Snow Hill – Marylebone train at West Ruislip so that passengers could get back to London quickly, thanks to them for this action. D6515 stayed in London to be ready to work 'The Purbeck Explorer' to Swanage on 10th May 2018.
