(1) John Clifford's comments: There was a slow start from Redhill as we were behind the 07.56 Letchworth - Horsham. It left Three Bridges 4 minutes late and, itself, was behind the 09.07 London Bridge - Portsmouth Harbour (10 minutes late at Three Bridges). Hence the signal stops including the one at Littlehaven. Once through Horsham, where we were 8½ minutes late, we managed to make up some time, passing Ford just 3 minutes late. At Chichester I noticed that the departure indicator was showing a signal problem at Bedhampton. We passed Havant slightly early, but then ran into the signal problem, with stops at three signals between Bedhampton and Farlington Jn. Although we passed the later 13 minutes late there was enough pathing allowance in the timings to see us arrive at Portsmouth Harbour only 6 minutes late. On this day Portsmouth is best described as cold and wet. I made my was over to the Isle of Wight to sample the "new" class 484s. Only one was running, No.484002. The return leg of the tour left Portsmouth Harbour on time and followed the 16.39 Portsmouth Harbour - Southampton Central as far as Portcreek Jn. Once past this point we gained on the schedule. We should have been behind the 16.13 Southampton Central - London Bridge, but as that train was starting from Barnham it could not checked us. Arrival time at Chichester was 7 minutes early. The 16.13 left Barnham 6 minutes late, so it checked us there. Time was made up until we were stopped outside Horsham to let the 17.55 Horsham - Letchworth to leave 3 minutes late. It was behind the 16.56 Bognor Regis - London Bridge, which had departed Horsham 5 minutes late. We stopped at the first signal after Horsham and then continued. Arrival time at Redhill was 3½ minutes late.
