The Cambrian Scenic Tour

Loco Used 348

Route :

Loco Route
348 Leeds City - New Pudsey - Halifax - Huddersfield - Diggle - Stalybridge - Guide Bridge - Stockport - Crewe - Shrewsbury - Welshpool - Towyn
348 Towyn - Welshpool - Shrewsbury - Crewe - Stockport - Stalybridge - Huddersfield - Halifax - Leeds

Notes :
Although basically an out & back tour this one featured motor coach visits to a number of the Welsh narrow gauge lines, interspersed with the scenic Welsh countryside. On the return heavy thunderstorms were encountered, though these had little effect on the timekeeping.

At Towyn the Shrewsbury crew were somewhat alarmed to discover that they were driving a Type 4 rather than a Type 3. The concerns were brought to the attention of Control who wisely suggested that as the locomotive had got there safely it should be OK to bring it back on the return working. During the summer of 1966 E.E. Type 3's had been tested on the Cambrian lines, whether any Type 4's had ventured on to the Cambrian lines prior to the visit of 348 is not known to the writer.
