Notes :
(1) 27046 failed.
(2) plus 27046 dead.
(3) 40122 piloted 'under the wires'.
(4) Harry Harper comments: As you probably know in the 1960's when steam +
diesel were required to double head the ruling was diesel as pilot so avoiding
spark risk to the inside loco. On this tour an rumour circulated that a Class 27
was to pilot Carlisle to Annan. One of the 5305 supporters remarked that, if so,
steam should lead as he didn't want a Class 27 setting fire to his Black 5.
Lucky 40122 turned up.
