John Clifford's comments: This was one of the usual “Cumbrian Mountain” trains.
What was unusual was the combination of a “B1” and a “Merchant Navy” double
heading. None of my friends or travelling companions could recall a previous
incidence. I joined the train at Crewe. We were slightly late away. At
Carnforth, after changing locos, we waited for the 10.30 Manchester Airport -
Edinburgh (3 minutes late here) to go ahead, then the 11.21 Lancaster - Barrow
also passed us so we were 7 minutes late away. Without a lot of effort (it
seemed) the two engines ate up the schedule to reach Carlisle 7 minutes early. The
return journey was via the Settle & Carlisle line. Northern Rail were on strike
so we were the first (and only) train over the line that day. There had been a
heavy snowfall. Network Rail wanted us to check for any icicles formed in the
tunnels, so it was a case of stopping at signal boxes, reporting to the signalmen
and going slowly through the tunnels. The first water stop was at Appleby, but
only 61306 took water. The next water stop was at Hellifield Goods Loop but the
water supply was frozen there. Onwards we went to make an extra stop at Cherry
Tree for a lengthy wait where both engines were replenished. This did
not delay any other trains as the strike had caused cancellation of many trains.
At Ribble Jn there was a brief stop to let the 18.35 Preston - Blackburn E.C.S.
pass. At Preston there was a delay in pulling the strings for the changeover
from vacuum to air breaking. In turn this meant our waiting for the 16.40
Glasgow - Euston (on time) and the 16.11 Edinburgh - Manchester Airport (15
minutes late) to precede us. We left Preston 28 minutes late and had made up
some time by Crewe where I left the train. I understand that Euston was reached
on time.
