(2) John Clifford's comments: This tour was originally advertised as being hauled by 61306 "Mayflower". The engine failed with a boiler problem a week beforehand, so it became diesel hauled. It was hoped that the train would be double headed by two "Crompton's" with a Class 47 on the back. We were advised that the two "Crompton's" would not talk to each other, so the tour ran a shown above. On the day we left on time but were behind the 11.55 Victoria - Orpington which was 4 minutes late at Brixton. After branching off we made up the lost time only to catch up the 11.56 Blackfriars - Orpington at Catford. Then we were held at Shortlands Jn to let the 12.10 Victoria - Dover Priory precede us. It was 9 minutes late at this point. Again we made up time and observed the “water” stop at Maidstone East. At Ashford 'B' Jn were held to let the 14.05 Ashford - Victoria via Maidstone East go up which left Ashford 5 minutes late. On the return leg we followed the 15.57 Ashford - Victoria from Ashford but this was allowed for in the timing so were reached the Swanley stop early. At Ravensbourne Jn we were held for the 16.44 Gillingham - Victoria go ahead. Two further stops ensued. At Nunhead Jn the 16.50 Gravesend - Victoria went ahead (11 minutes late at this point). Then at Brixton precedence was given to the 16.25 Canterbury West - Victoria which passed 2 minutes late. Arrival at Victoria was 4 minutes late.
